Frequently Asked Questions
-
Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people visit an osteopath.
After a thorough assessment, we may use hands-on treatment, movement advice, exercise and education to help improve your symptoms and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
If we believe your condition requires further investigation or another healthcare provider, we'll discuss that with you and help guide the next steps.
-
No. You don't need a referral to book an appointment with an osteopath.
However, if you're accessing treatment through certain programs, such as a Medicare Chronic Disease Management Plan (formerly EPC), DVA, or WorkCover, you may need a referral from your GP or treating practitioner.
If you're unsure whether you need a referral, feel free to contact us before booking.
-
Yes. Most private health funds provide benefits for osteopathy, depending on your level of extras cover.
Payment is made at the time of your appointment, and we'll provide you with a receipt so you can claim directly from your private health fund. Many health funds allow claims to be submitted quickly through their mobile app or online portal. We are currently however, able to process Medicare claims for you on the spot.
If you're unsure about your level of cover, we recommend contacting your health fund before your appointment.
-
If you have any relevant X-rays, MRI scans, ultrasound reports, specialist letters or other medical reports, it's helpful to bring them with you. Alternatively you can email them to us directly.
Otherwise, simply arrive a few minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork before your consultation.
-
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily, such as a T-shirt with shorts or loose-fitting pants.
Depending on the area being assessed, you may be asked to remove or adjust certain items of clothing. If this is necessary, your privacy and comfort will always be respected, and a gown will be provided when appropriate.
-
Initial Consultation: 45–60 minutes
Follow-up Appointment: 30–45 minutes
This allows enough time for a thorough assessment, hands-on treatment where appropriate, and discussion of your management plan.
-
Every person is different, so there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer.
The number of appointments depends on factors such as:
How long you've had the problem
The severity of your symptoms
Your general health
Your goals
How your body responds to treatment
Many acute conditions improve within a small number of visits, while more persistent or complex conditions may require a longer management plan.
After your initial assessment, we'll discuss our recommendations with you so you know what to expect.
-
Your first appointment is designed to understand why you're experiencing pain—not just where it hurts.
We'll begin by discussing:
Your current symptoms
Your medical history
Previous injuries
Your work, hobbies and lifestyle
Your goals for treatment
We'll then perform a thorough assessment, which may include movement testing, orthopaedic and neurological examination, and assessment of other areas that may be contributing to your symptoms.
For example, if you're experiencing knee pain, we'll often assess your ankle, hip and lower back to gain a complete picture of how you're moving.
Once we've identified the likely cause of your symptoms, we'll explain our findings and discuss the most appropriate treatment options.
Treatment may include:
Hands-on osteopathic techniques
Dry needling (where appropriate)
Soft tissue therapy
Joint mobilisation or manipulation
Exercise prescription
Advice about activity, work and recovery
Before you leave, you'll receive a clear management plan so you understand what to expect and what you can do to help your recovery.
-
Most osteopathic treatment is gentle and well tolerated.
Some techniques may reproduce your familiar symptoms briefly, while others are very gentle. Occasionally, people experience mild soreness for 24–48 hours after treatment, similar to how you might feel after exercising.
We'll always explain what we're doing and tailor treatment to your comfort level.
